Professor of Sustainable Systems and Integrative Assessment

About the role

The University of Tasmania seeks a senior academic leader to head the development and delivery of its bid for the 2026 National Environmental Science Program Marine Hub (NESP3). This strategic appointment will guide the Hub’s architecture, governance and performance, and provide executive‑level oversight for its first six‑year funding period.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the preparation and submission of the University’s NESP3 bid.
• Design the Hub’s program structure, governance model and performance framework.
• Secure and sustain commitments from national and international partners.
• Align research activities with national decision‑making priorities such as climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, environmental approvals, cumulative impact assessment, National Ecosystem Accounts and State of the Environment reporting.
• Provide executive academic leadership for the Hub’s implementation and ongoing management.

Required profile

• Established senior academic with a strong record in marine and environmental science.
• Demonstrated experience leading large, multi‑partner research initiatives.
• Deep understanding of national environmental policy cycles and decision‑ready science.
• Proven ability to build and manage national consortia.
• Commitment to interdisciplinary, integrative assessment approaches.
