Professor of Artificial Intelligence (Research-focused)

About the role

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) seeks a Professor to join the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute (AAII) on a continuing research‑intensive contract. The position will focus on advancing foundational AI theory and developing novel methodologies during the first two years.

Key responsibilities

• Lead cutting‑edge research in core AI areas, especially agentic AI, multi‑modal large language models, LLM‑powered decision‑making, and advanced computer vision.
• Develop and manage innovative research projects, securing government and industry funding.
• Publish high‑impact scholarly work and contribute to the scientific foundations of modern AI.
• Mentor and co‑supervise undergraduate, honours, Masters and HDR students as well as postdoctoral researchers.

Required profile

• PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology or a closely related discipline.
• Distinguished international research record in artificial intelligence.
• Proven ability to deliver high‑quality results on government‑funded discovery projects (e.g., ARC).
• Experience writing competitive grant proposals and establishing industry collaborations.
• Demonstrated capability to mentor and supervise students and postdoctoral scholars.
