Process Development Engineer

About the role

Finisar Australia is seeking a Process Development Engineer to lead the creation and optimisation of assembly processes for both new product introductions and existing product lines. The role sits in a high‑technology cleanroom environment and requires a hands‑on, precision‑focused approach to manufacturing optical communication components.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and improve assembly processes for new and existing optical products.
• Create, release and maintain process documentation, specifications and work instructions.
• Plan and execute validation testing for new assembly methods.
• Train operators and technicians on updated processes.
• Establish and monitor SPC metrics to track yield and failure modes.
• Contribute to product design with a strong focus on Design for Manufacture (DFM).
• Drive continuous‑improvement projects to reduce cost and increase efficiency.
• Support transfer of processes to overseas facilities and customised product variants.
• Conduct regular audits of processes, staff and equipment, ensuring OH&S compliance.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science.
• Minimum 5 years experience developing or designing processes/equipment for electro‑mechanical or mechanical assemblies.
• Strong understanding of precision materials (low‑thermal‑expansion adhesives, metals, ceramics) and related testing methods.
