Principal Strategic Planner

About the role

Cardinia Shire Council is recruiting a Principal Strategic Planner to shape the future of its region through strategic planning that delivers sustainable outcomes. The role is full-time, hybrid, based at the officer location, and pays $109,920-$132,674 plus super and a monthly day off. It covers a diverse landscape including state-significant agricultural and industrial land, suburbs and townships, and precinct structure plans and activity centres.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and preparation of Planning Scheme Amendments.
• Drive strategic planning initiatives and develop strategies that protect the natural environment while enabling sustainable growth.
• Provide expert advice and mentor emerging planners within the team.
• Engage with councillors, community groups and external agencies to build shared planning outcomes.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in planning or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience in strategic land use planning, ideally with strong policy development, project management and strategic report writing exposure.
• Experience leading complex planning projects and managing external consultants.
• Confidence presenting to executive audiences and navigating high-level decision-making.
• Valid Australian working rights; successful applicants must pass a National Police Check and pre-employment medicals, and some positions may need additional checks.

Required skills

• Strong understanding of planning legislation, including the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and the State Government's Plan for Victoria.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building across government, community and industry.
