Principal Software Engineer - Digitisation and Enablement

About the role

CommBank's Digitisation & Enablement team is transforming how platforms, systems and capabilities are designed, built and delivered across the enterprise. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will shape technology strategy and architecture across multiple teams, guiding how modern platforms are built, scaled and evolved in a complex enterprise environment. You will work across several squads, partnering with senior engineering leaders, architects, product leaders and engineering managers.

Key responsibilities

• Co-create technology strategy and roadmaps aligned to business objectives, and define architectural direction across platforms, services and systems
• Ensure solutions meet long-term scalability, reliability, security and operability goals, and guide modernisation of enterprise systems
• Provide technical leadership across multiple squads, identify opportunities for reuse, simplification and standardisation, and resolve complex cross-domain engineering challenges
• Influence engineering roadmaps and investment decisions
• Champion engineering standards, patterns and best practices, and drive improvements in quality, observability, automation and reliability
• Lead architecture reviews and governance, and enable teams to work independently while keeping platform consistency
• Mentor staff and senior engineers, coach and share knowledge, and act as a trusted advisor to senior engineering leadership

Required profile

• Significant experience leading large-scale platforms and distributed systems
• Proven success driving technical strategy across multiple teams
• Deep expertise in cloud-native architecture and modern engineering practices
• Experience building shared platforms, reusable services or enterprise capabilities
• Ability to balance immediate delivery with long-term platform evolution, and to influence through technical credibility

Required skills

• Java / Spring Boot, distributed systems and API-driven architectures
• Temporal (or similar) workflow and orchestration platforms
• AWS, including Lambda and cloud-native architectures
• Python, agentic AI patterns and agent SDKs (e.g. LangGraph)
• GitHub (CI/CD pipelines) and modern DevOps and automation practices
