Principal Lawyer – Legal Advice Team

About the role

The Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman is seeking a Principal Lawyer to join its Legal Advice Team in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. The role can be full‑time or part‑time and offers a blend of office‑based and remote work.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and manage a team of lawyers to deliver high‑quality, strategic legal advice on complex workplace relations and related legal matters.
• Provide, review and settle oral and written advice, legal reviews of educational materials, and manage external legal providers and spend.
• Develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and contribute to agency strategic goals.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years post‑admission experience with proven leadership and management capability.
• Extensive experience advising on complex workplace relations issues, preferably in a regulatory context.
• Australian citizenship and ability to obtain or hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance.

Required skills

• Strong legal research, analytical and persuasive writing abilities.
• Demonstrated risk identification and management skills.
