Principal Engineer – Roads & Highways / Area Manager

About the role

SMEC, part of the global SJ Group, is seeking a senior leader to combine strategic area management with technical engineering expertise for roads and highways projects in Far North Queensland. The role balances business development, client relationship management, and operational oversight with high‑level technical direction across transport infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Cairns office, executing the area operational plan and driving sustainable business growth.
• Lead business development activities, nurture client relationships, and act as the primary contact for major regional opportunities.
• Oversee commercial management, governance practices, and resource allocation for projects.
• Mentor local sector managers and foster a high‑performing team culture through pastoral care and people leadership.
• Deliver advanced technical leadership on transport projects, ensuring quality, timeliness, and coordination of deliverables.
• Maintain the highest technical standards, exceed client expectations, and contribute to the commercial success of projects.

Required profile

• Proven senior engineering leadership experience, preferably within roads and highways or transport infrastructure.
• Strong commercial acumen with a track record of successful business development and client management.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
