Principal AI Engineer - Sydney

About the role

A Principal AI Engineer is sought to lead the design, development and deployment of AI solutions that deliver measurable outcomes for customers and the business. This is a senior technical leadership role helping to define AI strategy, influence AI adoption across the organisation and lead scalable AI products, platforms and capabilities. Depending on background and interest, the role focuses on either AI Product Engineering or AI Platform Engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Product focus: design and build AI-powered products, features and customer experiences; partner with Product Managers, customers and stakeholders to find high-value AI opportunities; lead AI use cases from discovery and experimentation through to production; deliver measurable customer and commercial outcomes with GenAI and Agentic AI.
• Platform focus: build and evolve enterprise AI platform capabilities; design scalable infrastructure for AI development, deployment and operations; establish AI governance, observability, monitoring and operational best practices; create reusable AI frameworks, tooling and engineering standards; support teams moving AI from proof-of-concept to production.

Required profile

• Extensive software engineering experience with strong fundamentals and a track record of delivering solutions from concept to production.
• Proven experience building AI-enabled products, platforms or solutions in production environments.
• Strong understanding of modern software architecture, cloud-native development and scalable systems design.
• Experience evaluating AI opportunities and turning them into business value.
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement and communication skills, able to influence Product, Engineering, Customer and Business teams.
• Comfortable working in ambiguity and driving innovation in emerging technologies.

Required skills

• Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) and Agentic AI systems.
• Preferred: experience building AI agents, copilots, RAG solutions or AI-powered workflows.
• Preferred: expertise on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
• Preferred: experience setting up AI governance, responsible AI and operational frameworks, and mentoring engineers.
