Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Sociology & Social Policy

About the role

The School of Social Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to lead an independent research programme in sociology and social policy. The role focuses on equity, social justice and social change, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the university’s 2030 Strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver a high‑quality research agenda in sociology and social policy.
• Produce peer‑reviewed publications and research‑impact activities.
• Prepare and submit competitive grant applications (Category 2‑4) to external funders.
• Build and maintain relationships with industry, policy makers and funding bodies.
• Contribute to the School’s research culture through workshops, seminars and mentoring.
• Participate in departmental and university meetings and undertake professional development.

Required profile

• PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline.
• Emerging research record with publications and involvement in funded projects, preferably in areas such as Sexualities and Genders, Challenging Racism or Critical Pedagogies.
• Ability to translate research for public audiences and engage with non‑academic stakeholders.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills tailored to academic and non‑academic audiences.
• Collaborative, collegial approach with excellent interpersonal skills.

• Fixed‑term contract until 31 December 2028 (full‑time).
• Annual salary range $97,153 – $117,376 (AUD) plus 17 % superannuation and leave loading.
