Postdoctoral Fellow – Gut Therapeutics and Metagenomics

About the role

The Australian National University (ANU) Research School of Biology is offering a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral fellowship (up to 2 years) supporting a National Health and Medical Research Council Ideas Grant. The project tests a delivery system for releasing therapeutics in the gut to prevent urinary tract infections, using mouse experiments, metagenomics and RNAseq analyses. It is advertised as an Academic Level A position.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out mouse experimentation, metagenomics and RNAseq analyses for the NHMRC-funded project.
• Train and mentor 2-3 Honours and/or PhD students and supervise undergraduate students on related projects.
• Work closely with Dr Leyton, Dr Furlong and Professor Schwessinger to meet the project milestones.

Required profile

• Demonstrable experience in experimentation using mouse models of human disease.
• A friendly, self-motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills, who takes initiative and works both independently and collaboratively.

Required skills

• Shotgun metagenomics by long-read (Nanopore) sequencing, metagenome-assembled genome synthesis, metagenome classification and analysis, taxonomic comparisons and/or transcriptomics are viewed favourably but are not essential.

What we offer

• Salary package of $91,546 - $114,906 per annum plus 17% superannuation.
• Full-time, fixed-term appointment for up to 2 years.
