Platform Engineer

About the role

Optus is seeking a mid‑level Platform Engineer to join its Network Strategy and Architecture team in Sydney. You will help design, build, and operate a hybrid‑cloud developer platform using modern DevOps tools, ensuring developers can deliver services quickly and reliably.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and operate GitLab, including CI pipelines, runners, and integrations.
• Support HashiCorp Vault operations – auth methods, policies, secret engines, and workload integrations.
• Manage automation tasks with Ansible Tower/AWX, creating playbooks and job templates.
• Maintain cloud‑native infrastructure across Kubernetes clusters (Rancher, OpenShift) and related components.
• Develop and maintain Terraform and Pulumi modules for infrastructure deployments.
• Implement GitOps workflows using Argo CD or similar tools.
• Apply platform security practices such as secrets hygiene, RBAC, and image scanning.
• Support monitoring, alerting, and SLO tracking for platform services.
• Operate object storage solutions (e.g., MinIO) for platform needs.
• Create and keep up‑to‑date documentation, runbooks, and operational guides.
• Participate in incident response, on‑call rotation, and provide technical support to product teams onboarding to the platform.

Required profile

• At least 4 + years of hands‑on experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, or SRE roles.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset with curiosity for complex systems.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with developers.

Required skills

• GitLab CI/CD (pipelines, runners, YAML configuration).
• HashiCorp Vault (policies, secret engines, auth methods).
• Ansible (Tower/AWX) automation.
• Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and/or Pulumi.
• Kubernetes (deployments, Helm, Kustomize, Rancher, OpenShift).
• GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux.
• Scripting in Bash, Python, or TypeScript.
• Experience with object storage platforms like MinIO.
• Familiarity with Azure, AWS, or on‑prem VMware environments (bonus).
• Knowledge of observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK, OpenTelemetry) (bonus).
