Perception Engineer – Localisation & Sensor Fusion

About the role

Breaker is building a 3D localisation pipeline that turns 2D camera detections into precise world coordinates using only passive sensors. You will own this end‑to‑end system, improve its accuracy, and expand its capabilities across diverse hardware.

Key responsibilities

• Own the accuracy and performance of the 3D localisation pipeline, from 2D bounding boxes to lat/long/alt outputs.
• Build metrics, ground‑truth collection processes and automated evaluation tooling to track performance.
• Research, prototype and deploy new localisation and sensor‑fusion techniques.
• Extend the system to track moving objects from moving platforms and generalise it across different camera hardware.
• Define interface contracts with CV, hardware and field‑operations teams and create data workflows for continuous improvement.
• Design field‑test scenarios, conduct regular field testing and train field teams on data‑collection requirements.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience with camera‑based localisation on moving robotic platforms (monocular or stereo).
• Strong sensor‑fusion fundamentals, including timing, calibration and multi‑stream data handling.
• Proven ability to debug real‑time datasets, identify failure modes and systematically improve localisation.
• Experience deploying production systems on edge hardware, not just research prototypes.
• Legal right to work in Australia and willingness to participate in regular field testing.

• Linux development environment
• Optimization back‑ends such as Ceres or GTSAM
• ROS/ROS2
• Edge hardware (e.g., Jetson) real‑time processing
• Camera systems, gimbals and photogrammetry pipelines
• GPS‑denied navigation concepts (highly valued)
