Peer Family Support Worker

About the role

Wellways is recruiting Peer Family Support Workers in Mackay, Queensland, for ongoing full-time and part-time (30.4 hours per week) roles. The position supports carers and families on their journey to recovery after an attempted suicide of a loved one. It is a peer-led, community-based role built on lived experience, mutual understanding and psychoeducation.

Key responsibilities

• Link participants with other community support services
• Provide gentle psychoeducational tools and guidance on ways to build a supportive, understanding and confident environment
• Help people understand how they feel and define what matters in the family's recovery journey
• Carer peer connection in crisis, providing information and practical resources
• Facilitate peer support groups, including educational sessions
• Proactive follow-up, service navigation and advocacy

Required profile

• Lived experience of supporting a loved one with suicidal ideation, crisis and/or suicide attempts
• Relevant qualifications or commensurate experience in a support role for people with mental health conditions
• Satisfactory police record check, Blue Card (Working with Children Check) and NDIS Worker Screening Check
• Right to work in Australia

Required skills

• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to interact effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds

• Pay of $40.49-$43.42 per hour plus superannuation and salary packaging benefits
