Payroll Team Leader

About the role

JBS Australia employs more than 15,000 people across Australia and New Zealand, so payroll is a critical function. It is looking for an experienced, people-focused Payroll Team Leader to lead a team of 8 Payroll Officers and oversee the accurate and compliant delivery of high-volume weekly and fortnightly payrolls for employees and labour hire personnel. The role reports to the Payroll Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach, mentor and develop a team of 8 Payroll Officers, and manage workloads and payroll schedules so payrolls are processed accurately and on time.
• Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for 15,000+ employees across multiple business operations.
• Review and approve complex payroll transactions, including overpayments and adjustments, and act as escalation point for complex enquiries.
• Maintain accurate and compliant employee payroll records and documentation.
• Drive process improvements and support payroll system upgrades, testing, implementation and optimisation.
• Develop and maintain payroll procedures, documentation and work instructions.
• Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, training and performance management, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, SOX requirements and company policies.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading or supervising a payroll team.
• Extensive end-to-end payroll experience in a high-volume environment.
• Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, compliance requirements and best practice.
• Attention to detail, problem-solving skills and experience handling escalations and complex matters.
• Ability to prioritise and manage competing deadlines; stakeholder engagement and customer service skills.

Required skills

• Desirable: SAP Payroll and SAP SuccessFactors experience.
• Desirable: advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Desirable: experience leading payroll operations in a large, multi-site organisation.
