Payroll Project Lead - National Payroll Centralisation

About the role

A newly created senior payroll role in a major HRIS rollout, helping a client of an ASX-listed group move from a single-state payroll to a national one. The client's NSW payroll currently covers 2,500+ employees across multiple sites, for a unionised workforce; states are moving across one by one until centralisation is complete by the end of 2027, taking payroll to 5,000+ employees. The role reports to the People and Culture Manager NSW and works alongside a payroll team of eight.

Key responsibilities

• Train operations managers and site leaders on timekeeping and roster inputs so that new contract work and roster changes flow cleanly into payroll, reducing rework and overtime
• Deliver current system integration projects and mentor senior team members
• Keep operational leaders and employee representatives informed early so preventable disputes are avoided
• Review configuration, pay coding and enterprise agreement interpretation for the new HRIS rollout, ensure recommendations are adopted and build a repeatable playbook for each state
• Meet rising compliance obligations including same-day super and Single Touch Payroll, and audit requirements of an ASX-listed parent

Required profile

• Experienced payroll manager in a complex, high-volume, unionised environment, having run payroll under enterprise agreements
• Experience implementing a new HRIS or payroll system, consolidating payrolls, and training operational leaders to reduce errors
• Experience delivering same-day super and Single Touch Payroll compliance and meeting audit requirements in an ASX-listed or similar structure
• Ability to build and mentor a payroll team and work independently at payroll manager level
• Unrestricted working rights in Australia; pre-employment checks apply

Required skills

• Experience with Workday, ADP, Preceda or a similar platform is highly regarded
• Payroll management and HRIS implementation
