Payroll Manager

About the role

Austal, Australia's global shipbuilder and defence prime contractor, is looking for a Payroll Manager based in Henderson. The role oversees accurate, timely and compliant end-to-end payroll for about 1,200 employees across Australia, the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago, with growth expected. It leads and develops the payroll function, maintains effective controls and ensures the integrity of payroll data and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Manage payroll activities including new starters, terminations, remuneration changes, allowances, deductions, overtime, leave, superannuation and reimbursements
• Calculate and process employee entitlements such as leave accruals and termination payments
• Run payroll calendars, cut-off dates, reconciliations, reporting and sign-off processes
• Resolve complex payroll queries and escalations
• Act as Subject Matter Expert for Workday payroll, leading enhancements, upgrades, testing, configuration and process improvements
• Maintain data accuracy and report on payroll performance
• Ensure compliance with PAYG withholding, Single Touch Payroll (STP), payroll tax, workers' compensation and superannuation, and coordinate audits
• Lead, coach and develop the payroll team

Required profile

• Relevant qualification in Payroll Management or equivalent, and a tertiary degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or a related discipline
• 3+ years as a Payroll Manager in a blue/white collar workforce, and 5+ years in a high-volume payroll role with weekly and monthly cycles
• Ability to lead and motivate a team and meet strict deadlines
• Eligibility for a Defence Security Clearance
• Desirable: international payroll experience (UK and/or Europe)
