Paediatric Intensive Care Fellow

About the role

The Paediatric Intensive Care Fellow provides direct medical care of assigned intensive and high-acuity patients under the supervision of a Senior Medical Officer appointed to the Department of Paediatric Intensive Care. Fellows act in the intensive care specialist role, covering the full range of paediatric intensive care patients including oncology, burns, trauma, cardiac, extracorporeal life support and organ transplantation. They also take part in the CHQRS, providing retrieval coordination and patient transport and contributing to clinical governance. Working as Acting SMO, fellows make clinical decisions in close consultation with their supervisor. The role meets the Transitional Year criteria approved by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver medical services through clinical duties at the PICU Fellow level, in line with CHQ, PICU and CHQRS policies and clinical practice guidelines.
• Lead clinically within a multidisciplinary team caring for PICU patients or those referred to CHQRS.
• Conduct handovers and ward rounds, assess patients, plan management and arrange investigations and treatment, documenting everything in the electronic medical record.
• Keep the supervising SMO informed of significant changes in patients' conditions.
• Collaborate closely with PICU nursing, allied health and administrative staff.
• Ensure patients and families are well informed about clinical management and decision making.
