Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

DTCo is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its North Melbourne team. You will take projects from concept through detailed design to production release across defence, food processing, manufacturing and healthcare sectors.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems from concept to production release.
• Interpret client scopes and apply relevant engineering requirements, specifications and standards.
• Perform engineering analysis, including calculations, tolerance stack‑ups, material selection and FEA where required.
• Ensure designs comply with statutory, regulatory and Australian Standards.
• Produce and check 3D models, drawings and technical documentation, maintaining design records and change history.
• Guide the drafting team and review drawings for accuracy before release.
• Collaborate with clients, suppliers and manufacturers to resolve design and production issues.
• Track tasks against project schedules and flag risks early.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical or Mechatronics).
• 2 to 5 years post‑graduate experience in mechanical design or design engineering.
• Australian citizenship and eligibility for baseline security clearance.

Required skills

• Proficiency in complex 3D CAD modelling (Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or similar) and AutoCAD.
• Understanding of manufacturing methods (fabrication, machining, sheet metal) and design for manufacture.
• Working knowledge of AS 1100 drawing standards and GD&T.
• Ability to write clear technical documents and specifications.
