Manager, Laboratory and Technical Services

About the role

James Cook University is recruiting a Manager, Laboratory and Technical Services for the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM), based at the Cairns Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield. This is a full-time, continuing position of 36.25 hours per week. The manager provides direction across laboratory and technical services so that researchers have access to high-quality facilities, specialist equipment and expert support, and leads a team of technical professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee laboratory operations, resource allocation, governance, safety and compliance.
• Manage risk while maintaining high operational standards, drawing on knowledge of laboratory governance and workplace health and safety.
• Drive service improvements and enhance operational effectiveness.
• Keep laboratory and technical services responsive to the evolving needs of research programs.
• Build collaborative, accountable cultures and strong stakeholder relationships.

Required profile

• Experienced leader with a strong background in laboratory operations, technical services or research support environments.
• Demonstrated success leading teams and managing operational resources in complex organisations.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
