Laboratory Geotechnician

About the role

ATC Williams is seeking a Laboratory Geotechnician to join its Melbourne (and potentially Newcastle) laboratory team. This permanent, full‑time position offers hands‑on experience with soil testing for mining, resources, energy and infrastructure projects across Australia and globally.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, label, package and transport soil samples from field sites to the laboratory.
• Schedule and manage test programs through work orders, ensuring timely delivery.
• Register samples, prepare test specimens and conduct laboratory testing according to client instructions.
• Prepare soil samples by drying, sieving and storing in line with laboratory protocols.
• Perform a range of soil tests including grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction, permeability, soil moisture characteristic, transportable moisture limit and shear strength.
• Record test results accurately and assist in preparing factual laboratory reports for engineering assessments.
• Carry out equipment calibration, routine maintenance and laboratory housekeeping.

Required profile

• Recent Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent.
• Strong interest in geology or related fields.
• Good understanding of soil mechanics.
• Detail‑oriented with excellent problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
