Laboratory Assistant/Technician – Sample Preparation – Overnight

About the role

This full‑time night‑shift position is based in Murarrie, Brisbane. You will work from 8 pm to 4 am, Monday to Friday, preparing soil and water samples for analysis and supporting laboratory operations.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, sort and log soil and water samples in the LIMS system and prepare batch sheets using Microsoft Excel.
• Weigh samples, extract analytes, and transfer subsamples to the appropriate laboratory departments.
• Perform quality‑control tests, calibrate equipment such as syringes, steppers and solvent dispensers, and maintain traceability of all prepared samples.
• Handle quarantine samples according to AQIS procedures and manage waste disposal safely.
• Replenish consumables, keep the laboratory clean and orderly, and undertake any additional duties as directed by management.

Required profile

• Year 12 education with a good understanding of chemistry and mathematics; a science‑related degree is advantageous.
• No minimum experience required, though prior laboratory exposure is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and a hands‑on, proactive attitude.
• Must be currently based in Brisbane and have the right to work in Australia.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
• Basic laboratory techniques including weighing, sample extraction and equipment calibration.

• 30% shift loading for overnight work.
• Additional 1.5% superannuation on top of the standard rate.
