Head of Department – Learning and Pathways

About the role

Mackay State High School is seeking an instructional leader to head the Learning and Pathways portfolio, overseeing senior schooling (70%) and junior secondary (30%). The role connects early academic success with purposeful senior pathways and positive student destinations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the enactment of the K‑12 CARF and Mackay SHS Whole School Curriculum Framework in partnership with Deputy Principals and curriculum Heads of Department.
• Use achievement, participation, student voice and destination data to evaluate curriculum offerings and recommend future subjects, courses and pathways, including VET.
• Monitor academic achievement across Years 7‑12, including JCE and QCE eligibility, qualification completion and progress toward intended pathways.
• Coordinate NAPLAN testing, QCAA processes, senior internal and external examinations, and Access/Reasonable Adjustments arrangements.
• Manage the school RTO, drive strategic development of school‑based VET courses, and ensure VET compliance.
• Line‑manage the Industry Liaison Officer, Youth Support Coordinator and Data Administration Officer, setting expectations and reviewing progress.

• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with staff, students and external partners.
• Evidence‑based approach to improving learning outcomes and translating school priorities into coordinated action.
• Experience in leading curriculum development, assessment coordination and pathway planning across secondary education.
