Geologist - Capcoal Mine

About the role

Capcoal Mine, part of the Anglo American / De Beers Group, is seeking an experienced Geologist to join its Technical Services team on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent, the role provides short- to medium-term geological support across the operations, helping to maximise resource value and optimise production areas by identifying geological risks.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist coal quality advice to production teams and customers to support mine performance targets.
• Monitor and collect data, including the use of slope stability radar (SSR).
• Identify and manage geological and geotechnical hazards affecting mining operations.
• Improve coal mining plans and excavation methods by reconciling planned versus actual performance and analysing operational variances.
• Conduct mapping, logging and data validation, and develop short-term geological models.
• Inspect pits daily to maintain coal quality standards and manage quality-related risks.
• Support mine planning, drill and blast design, and daily operational decisions, and assist coal mining activities daily and as required.
• Monitor coal quality against customer specifications, investigate quality issues, minimise coal loss and contamination, and perform reconciliation analysis.
• Maintain and develop the geological production model for accurate coal quality forecasting.
• Collaborate with geologists, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers and operations teams.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Geological Sciences or a related program.
• At least three years of experience in operational mining, preferably open cut coal mining.
• Demonstrated experience contributing to a team to deliver set targets.
• Strong analysis, problem-solving and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
