Forward Deployed Engineer, Scams

About the role

The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is an embedded, hands-on technical role at AFCA, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority, focused on its Scams Prevention Framework. The FDE works directly with business stakeholders, customers and delivery teams to solve high-value operational challenges using software, AI, automation and data solutions, acting as the bridge between business problems and engineering execution.

Key responsibilities

• Engage with business teams to identify opportunities for automation, AI and digital enablement, and act as a trusted technical advisor to senior stakeholders.
• Design and build rapid prototypes, proofs of concept and production-ready solutions, applying modern engineering and DevOps practices.
• Build integrations across enterprise platforms such as Optimizely, Microsoft, ServiceNow, Dynamics, Workday, Databricks and data platforms, and develop scalable software and workflows.
• Implement AI-enabled solutions using LLMs, agents and retrieval architectures, ensuring compliance with governance, security and responsible AI requirements, and measure their value.
• Capture customer requirements and turn them into backlog items, influencing platform roadmaps and standardising bespoke solutions into reusable enterprise capabilities.
• Iterate quickly on user feedback, support implementation and adoption, and provide technical leadership across the solution lifecycle.

Required profile

• Experience in software engineering, solution engineering, AI engineering or data engineering.
• Proven ability to turn business problems into practical technology solutions.
• Experience building and deploying cloud-based applications and integrations.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, and ability to work in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
• Commercial mindset focused on measurable business outcomes.

Required skills

• Software development and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of Agile, DevOps and CI/CD.
• Experience with AI, automation and workflow technologies.
• Desirable: ServiceNow and API integration, generative AI and AI agents, Microsoft Azure and AI services, responsible AI governance and security knowledge, and cloud or AI certifications.
