Financial Controller

About the role

You will act as the controller for a small portfolio of businesses, overseeing month‑end close, payroll, cash and payments while serving as the primary finance contact for owners. The role involves cleaning up imperfect data, establishing reliable processes and providing commercial insight to clients across Australian time zones.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver accurate and timely month‑end close for each entity in your portfolio.
• Own all client obligations including tax lodgements, payroll compliance across states and workers‑comp declarations.
• Review and sign off on work prepared by the finance team, ensuring it meets standards before it reaches the client.
• Rebuild broken financial files – system migrations, reconciliation backlogs, historical payroll issues and overdue lodgements.
• Provide owners with commercial answers, not just numbers, and translate fixes into repeatable processes.

Required profile

• CA or CPA with at least three years of hands‑on experience running an Australian finance function (close, lodgements, payroll, cash management).
• Proven ability to manage multiple entities simultaneously and enjoy variety over monotony.
• Comfortable working with dirty data and turning chaotic ledgers into trustworthy records.
• Clear communicator who can explain financial implications and recommended actions to business owners.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Xero accounting software.
• Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new finance systems, including AI‑enhanced tools.
