Financial Controller

About the role

Our client, a fast‑growing specialist financial services firm operating in Australia, New Zealand and the United States, is hiring its first Financial Controller. Based in a Sydney CBD office, you will build and own the internal finance function, transitioning from a virtual CFO and outsourced bookkeeping model to a fully professionalised, scalable operation.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement finance processes, controls and policies for a regulated multi‑jurisdiction business.
• Manage operational finance including management accounts, payroll (STP, payroll tax, super), accounts payable, FP&A, forecasting and financial modelling.
• Own the general ledger, balance‑sheet reconciliations, monthly management accounts, board packs and cash‑flow forecasting.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and performance reporting in partnership with product, technology, operations and sales leaders.
• Oversee tax, audit and compliance (BAS/GST, PAYG, payroll tax, FBT, corporate income tax) and prepare for external audit readiness.
• Enhance core finance systems, drive automation and maintain documentation as the business scales.
• Act as a trusted financial advisor to the CEO and senior leadership team while building out the finance team.

Required profile

• CPA or CA qualified (or equivalent) with 6–10+ years of experience in financial control, audit or accounting.
• Experience in high‑growth, founder‑led or scaling businesses, preferably in financial services or other regulated industries.
• Hands‑on, detail‑oriented and comfortable creating structure in ambiguous environments.
• Commercially minded with strong judgement and integrity.
