Executive Director, Safe Transport Victoria

About the role

The Executive Director leads Safe Transport Victoria, the state’s transport safety regulator, overseeing safety and regulatory outcomes for bus, marine and commercial passenger vehicle sectors. Reporting to senior ministers, the role shapes a modern, risk‑based, intelligence‑led regulatory framework that protects Victorians while supporting an evolving transport system.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and governance for the regulator, ensuring integrity, independence and transparency.
• Develop and implement risk‑based, intelligence‑led regulatory approaches to improve safety outcomes.
• Advise ministers and senior government officials on transport safety risks, performance and emerging issues.
• Represent the regulator with industry, community, media and other stakeholders, especially during major safety incidents.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships across government, industry and community groups, including focus on safety for women and vulnerable passengers.

Required profile

• Extensive senior executive leadership experience, preferably within a large government department or complex public‑private model.
• Proven track record delivering transformational programs aligned with government transport and planning agendas.
• Strong background in regulatory leadership within a risk‑based, intelligence‑led environment.
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic advice to ministers and senior officials.
• Excellent relationship‑building skills with both public and private sector stakeholders.
