Engineering Manager - Core Platforms (Observability & Service Management)

About the role

CommBank is looking for an Engineering Manager, Core Platforms (Observability & Service Management), based in the Sydney CBD area. As a team lead and chapter lead, you will guide a team of engineers building scalable, secure and reliable platform capabilities, and help shape the future of observability, service management and automation across one of Australia's largest technology environments. At least half your time each month must be spent in the office, though other flexible arrangements can be discussed.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a team of engineers while fostering a high-performing, inclusive culture.
• Deliver reliable, secure and scalable technology outcomes aligned to business priorities.
• Enable engineers through effective prioritisation, removal of impediments and continuous improvement.
• Partner with Product, Architecture and other stakeholders to balance customer, technical and commercial outcomes.
• Champion modern software engineering, DevSecOps, automation and observability practices.
• Build team capability through mentoring, recruitment, succession planning and career development.
• Drive operational excellence across service reliability, risk management, security and compliance.
• Use engineering metrics and insights to improve effectiveness.

Required profile

• Strong engineering leadership background, enjoying complex technology challenges and developing people.
• Comfortable balancing strategic thinking with delivery execution in fast-paced, collaborative environments.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Experience managing budgets, financial controls and reporting.

Required skills

• Exposure to observability practices and technologies, OpenTelemetry (OTEL), ServiceNow and cloud platforms.
• Experience with AWS and/or Azure and modern cloud architectures.
• Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Docker.
• Understanding of operational excellence, service reliability, risk and security.
• Use of metrics and data-driven insights to improve engineering performance.
