Engineering Geologist – Experienced

About the role

SMEC and the SJ Group are seeking an Engineering Geologist to join their Geotech & Tunnels team in Sydney. The role offers the chance to apply technical expertise and project management skills across a range of infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engineering geology analysis and design tasks in line with technical standards and client requirements.
• Plan and execute projects of moderate complexity, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and contributors to coordinate project deliverables.
• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and proposals for small to medium‑sized projects.
• Manage project scope, risks, and competing priorities effectively.
• Support and mentor junior team members where appropriate.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Geology or a related geo‑science discipline.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in engineering geology, preferably within an engineering consultancy.
• Strong understanding of relevant Australian Standards and specifications.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a client‑focused mindset.

Required skills

• Proficiency in relevant geology software and general computer applications.
