Embedded Kotlin Engineer – Android & Voice‑First Devices

About the role

We are looking for an Embedded Kotlin Engineer to join Syntion’s Mobile App team in Melbourne. You will own the development of native Android software that runs directly on our AI‑powered wearable and the companion mobile applications that connect hardware, cloud services and user experience.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain native Android applications (Kotlin) for on‑device and companion use.
• Implement on‑device voice features such as wake‑word detection, audio capture pipeline, local/edge ASR and hand‑off to cloud services.
• Create and maintain communication layers (BLE, Wi‑Fi, TCP/HTTP, MQTT) between the wearable and mobile apps.
• Collaborate with embedded, firmware and backend teams to ensure low‑latency, power‑efficient operation.
• Integrate mobile apps with Azure‑based cloud services and manage CI/CD pipelines.
• Debug and resolve real‑world device issues related to connectivity, latency, audio, power and thermal behavior.

Required profile

• 3+ years of experience building production Android applications using Kotlin.
• Hands‑on experience with Android platform or customized AOSP builds.
• Background in audio/voice systems (wake‑word, ASR, echo‑cancellation, low‑latency I/O).
• Proven ability to design device communication protocols (BLE, Wi‑Fi, TCP/HTTP, MQTT).
• Experience with Azure DevOps for CI/CD, builds and releases.
• Strong debugging skills for embedded device issues.
• Experience with React for companion interfaces is a plus.
