Electrical Protection Engineer

About the role

SGS Australia is looking for an Electrical Protection Engineer to join its Electrical Engineering business. You will deliver testing, maintenance and commissioning services across electrical infrastructure, covering protection systems, substations, switchgear, transformers and high-voltage equipment. It is a hands-on role combining field testing, fault finding, technical reporting and customer support.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct protection relay testing, commissioning and maintenance of substations
• Perform transformer, circuit breaker, cable and earth testing
• Carry out thermography and corona inspections on electrical assets
• Undertake fault finding, testing, repair and maintenance of low-voltage and high-voltage equipment
• Read and interpret single-line diagrams to support testing and maintenance
• Produce accurate testing records and formal technical reports
• Work in line with statutory regulations, standards, SGS procedures and client requirements
• Conduct site safety assessments and liaise with clients on project requirements and technical advice
• Check equipment calibration and maintain testing instruments per manufacturer specs
• Document preventative maintenance requirements to improve asset reliability

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Current WA C Class driver's licence
• Demonstrated experience with MV and HV switchgear, transformers, HV cables, switchboards and circuit breakers
• Proven experience producing technical reports and recording test data
• Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams
• Strong communication, organisational and time management skills
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with minimal supervision
• Highly regarded: Electrical Workers Level "A" licence

• Testing equipment such as Omicron, Doble and Megger
