Director of Engineering – Data Centers

About the role

Our client, a fast‑growing data centre developer and operator in Australia, is looking for a Director of Engineering to steer all engineering activities across multiple hyperscale and enterprise facilities. Based in Sydney or Melbourne, the role reports to executive leadership and works closely with development, construction and operations teams to ensure technical integrity, scalability and reliability of current and future data centre projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the engineering function for national data centre projects, establishing standards, governance frameworks and technical policies.
• Build and mentor a multidisciplinary team of electrical, mechanical and controls engineers.
• Oversee concept, schematic and detailed design, reviewing and approving deliverables from consultants and contractors.
• Drive design standardisation to accelerate time‑to‑market and improve operational efficiency.
• Provide technical oversight during construction and commissioning, managing risk, change control and issue resolution.
• Collaborate with commissioning agents and operations teams to ensure smooth hand‑over and operational readiness.
• Develop long‑term lifecycle management strategies focused on energy efficiency, resilience and sustainability.
• Support capacity planning, future expansion programmes and contribute to uptime and reliability targets.

Required profile

• 10+ years of engineering experience in data centres, critical infrastructure or mission‑critical facilities.
• Proven leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical and BMS/control systems in mission‑critical environments.
• Experience delivering Tier III/Tier IV (or equivalent) data centre projects.
• Track record managing large‑scale capital projects and engaging with executives, clients, consultants and contractors.
