Design Engineer – Propulsion Systems

About the role

Thales is seeking a Design Engineer to join its Melbourne‑based propulsion team supporting the Munitions sites in Benalla and Mulwala. You will work on solid rocket motors, warheads and related propulsion systems, contributing to the development of high‑performance guided weapons and explosive ordnance.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design, development and continuous improvement of solid rocket motors, warheads and propulsion subsystems.
• Perform high‑quality engineering analysis and generate accurate technical documentation, reports and design artefacts.
• Plan, conduct and document testing activities to validate designs and support product development.
• Develop and implement manufacturing, prototyping and production support plans.
• Drive propulsion R&D initiatives, building internal capability and fostering innovation.

Required profile

• Degree qualified in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
• Experience in product development, mechanical design and engineering delivery.
• Strong engineering analysis, problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
• Ability to prepare technical reports and engineering documentation.
• Australian citizenship and eligibility for Defence security clearance.

Required skills

• Proficiency in CAD design and drafting, preferably using Creo.
• Solid engineering analysis capabilities.
