Cyber Security Operations Officer

About the role

Townsville City Council is looking for a Cyber Security Operations Officer to join its Cyber Security team. This hands‑on position monitors, investigates and responds to security alerts across the Council’s technology environment, acting as the first internal escalation point and supporting threat‑hunting activities.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, analyse and investigate alerts from SIEM, endpoint protection, identity, network and cloud security platforms.
• Serve as the primary internal escalation point for incidents raised by managed security service providers.
• Identify, triage and respond to threats following Council’s Incident Response procedures.
• Review logs and telemetry, produce technical incident reports and recommendations.
• Support threat‑hunting and security monitoring alongside the Cyber Security Engineer.
• Coordinate vulnerability identification, remediation tracking and reporting with technology teams.
• Assist with security reviews, audits and control assessments to identify risks and compliance gaps.
• Provide first‑level support for cyber security service requests and promote security awareness.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Cyber Security, Information Systems or related field (post‑graduate studies highly regarded).
• Minimum 5 years of IT experience, including at least 3 years in cyber or information security.
• Industry certifications such as CISM, CISA, GIAC GSEC or OSCP are desirable.
• Experience with security frameworks and standards, including ISO 27001 and the ACSC Essential Eight.

• Permanent full‑time role (36.25 hours/week, 9‑day fortnight).
• Salary range LGO6: $102,640 – $109,563 per annum plus superannuation.
