Counsellor - Student Experience and Success

About the role

Adelaide University is hiring a Counsellor for its Student Experience and Success (SES) Portfolio, based at the Metropolitan Campus in Adelaide CBD. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until September 2027, reporting to the Senior Manager, Counselling. The role provides brief intervention counselling and support to students from diverse educational, social and cultural backgrounds.

Key responsibilities

• Provide brief intervention personal counselling and support to students
• Deliver counselling face-to-face, by telephone, online and through crisis support to help students with issues affecting their learning outcomes
• Provide crisis counselling and risk assessments, implementing therapeutic and crisis intervention strategies
• Support triage and intake processes, including covering triage counsellors for students in distress or at risk

Required profile

• Postgraduate qualification or progress towards one, with extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training
• Eligibility to register with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) and/or the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
• Current Working with Children Check, as the role is prescribed under child safety legislation
• Experience in brief intervention counselling, risk assessment, crisis intervention and case management
• Demonstrated experience in online counselling and workshop facilitation, and collaborative work with academic staff

Required skills

• Proficiency in using technology to deliver counselling services and resources
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
• Broad understanding of the needs of tertiary students, including equity and social justice principles
