Control Systems Senior Engineer

About the role

Fortescue is looking for a Control Systems Senior Engineer based in Perth, reporting to the Principal Delivery Lead for Plant Control Intelligence. The role delivers advanced process control solutions for fixed plant operations, extending control schemes such as model predictive control with AI soft sensors and setpoint recommendation models to improve operating rate, recovery and yield, energy efficiency and water use. It suits experienced individual contributors who work autonomously across remote and site teams, and comes from backgrounds such as process and control engineering, industrial automation or applied research.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design, build, deployment and support of advanced process control systems across the development lifecycle.
• Help identify, quantify and validate efficiency and opportunities using data from a range of sources.
• Collaborate with data scientists and ML engineers to develop and extend control schemes using AI methods.
• Work with subject matter experts and users to shape technical requirements.
• Work with front-line and operational support teams to test, validate and refine models so they can be adopted and have operational impact.
• Maintain development backlogs and prioritise work with cross-functional teams.
• Support community development through technical engagement and leadership on advanced process control.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in APC, industrial control or applied research, with strong foundations and practical experience in model-based control.
• Tertiary qualification in process engineering, control engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear requirements.
• Experience and interest in AI-enabled workflows.
• Experience in mineral processing and bulk materials handling control systems is valued, as is site experience; strong control specialists from other process industries are also considered.

Required skills

• Practical experience in Python is well regarded.
• Familiarity with applied statistics and machine learning in industrial process operations is well regarded.
