Competition and Consumer Lawyer - Senior Associate

About the role

HWL Ebsworth's Brisbane Corporate & Commercial practice group, which includes eight partners, is looking for a Lawyer/Senior Associate in Competition and Consumer law. Working closely with the Competition partner, Simon Ellis, the role covers merger assessments and transactions, disputes and regulatory investigations, and general advisory work such as restraint of trade and consumer law issues.

Key responsibilities

• Manage complex competition issues in the transactional setting, including merger filings, engagement with the ACCC, drafting key provisions in commercial agreements and engaging with clients
• Assess competition risks in transactions and advise on strategies to manage them commercially
• Assist clients in responding to regulatory notices
• Advise on potential risks under Part IV of the Competition and Consumer Act and on ways to mitigate client risk
• Work with the corporate team to negotiate and prepare commercial documents and with the disputes team on competition or consumer disputes
• Develop client relationships, contribute to business development and mentor junior colleagues

Required profile

• Ideally 5+ years of professional experience in a reputable Competition & Consumer practice
• Experience advising on commercial, regulatory or competition-related matters
• Ability to deliver commercially astute and pragmatic legal advice
• Desire to build a long-term career in a leading national Corporate & Commercial team
