About the role

CommBank AI Labs, an applied AI research team within the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, is offering a 6-month onsite AI research internship in Sydney. The program takes a research idea from concept to publication and then to real-world products and experiences, with a clear pathway to submission at a top-tier conference. It is open to PhD researchers who want to see their work translated into systems used at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Work on a defined research problem over six months, with a clear pathway to submission at a top-tier conference
• Produce high-quality, publishable work on complex, unstructured, real-world datasets
• Contribute to AI-driven products that impact millions of customers
• Work within a team led by the Chief AI Scientist, Professor Mary-Anne Williams, in a faculty-style environment

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a PhD or within 12 months of submission
• Strong research track record in Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, Computer Science or related fields
• First-author publications or submissions at leading conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AISTATS, EMNLP, IJCAI or similar
• Ability to be based in Sydney for the full duration of the program

• Agentic AI systems and multi-agent orchestration
• LLM evaluation, alignment and AI safety
• Causal inference and counterfactual reasoning
• Responsible AI, fairness and interpretability
• Applied AI for financial services (risk, fraud, decisioning)
