Coal Technician - Bowen Basin Onsite Laboratories

About the role

SGS Australia's Energy Minerals business is looking for Coal Technicians to join its onsite laboratories in Bowen Basin, Queensland. The role covers the accurate collection, preparation and analysis of coal samples according to site requirements and Australian and international standards, with training across several sites and coverage where needed. It is a full-time permanent position on a 7/7 rotating day and night roster.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, prepare, analyse, store and report coal samples in line with approved procedures and standards.
• Ensure accuracy, precision and traceability of sample preparation and testing.
• Assist with preventative maintenance of laboratory and sample preparation equipment.
• Plan shift workflows and coordinate sample collection and analysis.
• Maintain accurate records and hand over information between shifts.
• Promote a strong safety culture and report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly.
• Support routine and project-based sampling and testing, and help with housekeeping and site maintenance.
• Be available to support other SGS laboratory locations if required.

Required profile

• Reliable, safety-focused person who takes pride in accurate results and teamwork.
• Coal sampling, preparation and testing experience preferred but not essential; previous experience in a mineral, coal or laboratory environment highly regarded.
• Comfortable working in heat, dust and cold weather.
• Ability to work to deadlines, independently and with initiative.
• Standard 11 qualification required; Open Australian Manual Driver's Licence preferred, S123 and G2 tickets advantageous but not essential.
• Pre-employment medical and health assessment required.

Required skills

• Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
