Civil and Defamation Solicitor (3-5 PQE)

About the role

O'Brien Criminal & Civil Solicitors is looking for a dedicated Defamation and Civil Solicitor to join its growing team in Sydney CBD. You will be managed and mentored by the Principal, Peter O'Brien, and Special Counsel, Stewart O'Connell. The role suits a solicitor with experience in defamation and civil litigation who thrives in a dynamic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert advice on intentional tort claims, such as assault, battery, unlawful detention, excessive force and malicious prosecution
• Manage clients
• Handle matters involving personal injury and compensation
• Liaise with counsel
• Prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions and affidavits
• Ensure deadlines are met
• Work closely with senior solicitors, associate solicitors and paralegals

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor with 3-5 years of PQE in defamation and civil litigation
• Experience working with groups and individuals who experience disadvantage
• Resilience when dealing with sensitive and confronting material
• Ability to manage a varied caseload with attention to detail and deadlines
• Ability to dissect complex legal issues and apply them to real-life scenarios
• Respectful, non-judgemental and trauma-informed approach to client management
• Collaborative team player with a passion for client service and legal excellence
• NSW practicing certificate required
• Australian citizenship or permanent residency required
