Chef – Restaurant Kitchen Lead

About the role

A full-time Chef position is available in Canberra (ACT 2601). The role oversees the restaurant kitchen by managing the food preparation team, deciding what dishes to serve and adjusting orders to guests' requests. It is a permanent position with an annual salary of $75,000-$85,000 depending on experience.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the kitchen team, coach the Sous Chef and train kitchen staff and apprentices
• Choose ingredients, design menus based on seasonal availability and create signature dishes
• Cook guest orders to their preferences and to food safety standards, checking food before service
• Plan menus, experiment with new specialties and recommend specials or seasonal dishes
• Order food supplies and maintain stock levels
• Prepare ingredients and set up, clean and organise workstations
• Take orders from wait staff or computerised systems and handle several orders at once
• Follow food safety best practices and work safely around knives and hot surfaces
• Work quickly and accurately during busy periods and occasionally help with cleaning when short-staffed

Required profile

• At least a relevant AQF (or equivalent) Diploma and 1 year of relevant work experience; three years of experience may substitute for the qualification
• Knowledge of food preparation regulations and standards, and of raw materials and quality control
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and as part of a team
• Strong communication and organisational skills
