Casual Equine Veterinary Nurse / Veterinary Assistant

About the role

A fully mobile, equine-only veterinary practice in Canberra is looking for a reliable, practical and horse-confident person to join its team on a casual basis, about 1-2 days per week. A veterinary nursing qualification is not required; strong horse handling skills and a willingness to learn are more important.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the veterinarian with equine consultations and procedures
• Handle horses safely and confidently
• Assist with sedation and treatments
• Prepare and maintain equipment
• Assist with diagnostics and procedures
• Take and handle samples
• Keep equipment, supplies and the vehicle organised
• Carry out basic administrative and record-keeping tasks
• Help give clients a professional and positive experience

Required profile

• Strong horse handling skills and confidence around horses
• Reliable, practical and willing to learn
• Comfortable working outdoors and travelling between appointments
• Ability to work calmly and safely around horses
• Friendly and professional with clients
• Can work independently as well as part of a small team
• Interest in veterinary work and equine health
• Previous experience working with horses is more important than a qualification; veterinary nursing experience or a qualification is an advantage but not essential
• Current driver's licence required
