Biological Technical Officer (Melbourne)

About the role

Deakin University is looking for a Biological Technical Officer for its Melbourne, Burwood Campus. The role prepares the practical labs where students build hands-on skills, handles safety and chemical handling, keeps equipment and materials ready for researchers, and works with teachers to design practicals. It is a full-time, continuing position at HEW level 5, paid $86,744-$97,290 plus 17% superannuation.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare specimens, calibrate equipment and mix reagents so students can start practicals immediately
• Troubleshoot equipment problems and coach students through techniques
• Restock kits, keep safety records up to date and stay ahead of practical-day issues
• Work with lecturers to improve experiments that do not cooperate, then test and roll out the fixes
• Handle contamination risks and chemical safety, and support dissection-based classes

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in biological sciences or laboratory technology with solid chemistry expertise
• Demonstrated dissection skills and practical knowledge of safe specimen preparation, handling, storage and disposal
• Molecular biology background and hands-on lab experience operating specialised instrumentation and maintaining contamination control
• Familiarity with university lab safety, risk assessment, hazardous substances, waste management and compliance
• Experience supporting undergraduate biology teaching labs through full practical cycles, with strong time management
• Full working rights in Australia; appointment is subject to pre-employment checks including Working with Children checks
