Backend Engineer (Payments, Remote)

About the role

EatClub is a food-tech company helping restaurants and bars connect with customers, with a platform used by over 4 million people and over 8,000 venues. As a remote Backend Engineer in its Software Engineering department, you build the systems behind the restaurant and diner experience, working in Java on serverless AWS, designing APIs and shipping features end-to-end with product and frontend teammates.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build scalable backend services in Java
• Develop and maintain serverless APIs, and build and consume REST and GraphQL APIs
• Take features from idea to production with product and frontend colleagues
• Improve performance, reliability and scalability of the systems
• Debug and fix the root cause of technical issues
• Write automated tests and review code
• Build new features that help restaurants fill tables and diners find deals, extend APIs, tune database queries and improve monitoring and testing of serverless services

Required profile

• 3-5 years of commercial experience as a Java developer
• Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
• Strong Java backend skills and a solid grounding in software development principles
• Experience building serverless APIs, REST and GraphQL APIs, and SQL and NoSQL databases (MySQL, Postgres)
• Performance tuning and debugging experience, and a habit of writing automated tests
• Familiarity with modern architectures and design patterns, Git, and strong written and verbal communication
• Full working rights in Australia
