Associate Director Mechanical Engineering – Water Infrastructure

About the role

Join AECOM’s Water Infrastructure team in Melbourne as an Associate Director Mechanical Engineer. You will lead strategy, design governance and delivery for complex water and wastewater treatment and conveyance programmes, acting as the Lead Verifier for mechanical design.

Key responsibilities

• Lead verification of mechanical design drawings, plant selection, specifications, valve and equipment schedules, lifting strategies, hydraulic head‑loss calculations and P&IDs.
• Prepare feasibility studies, outline and detailed designs, and provide construction support.
• Collaborate with civil, electrical, process and mechanical disciplines across Australia.
• Mentor junior engineers, conduct training and support site surveys.
• Facilitate design review meetings such as HAZOP, HAZID, ALM and SWIFT.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Chartered Engineer status with IMechE or similar institution.
• 15+ years of experience delivering multidisciplinary water infrastructure projects.
• Established client networks in Victoria’s water, infrastructure and government sectors.

Required skills

• Mechanical design and plant selection.
• Hydraulic calculations and head‑loss analysis.
• P&IDs and detailed engineering documentation.
• HAZOP/HAZID facilitation.
• Preparation of feasibility, outline and detailed design studies.
