APS6 Assurance and Improvements Officer

About the role

A federal government agency focused on the safety, wellbeing and quality of life of Australian residents has a newly created APS6 role in its Financial Framework and Business Improvement function. The work strengthens financial governance, improves internal controls and enhances assurance activities. It is a vacant position, open to Canberra or Sydney, with a hybrid working arrangement.

For private-sector applicants it is a non-ongoing 12-month contract with the possibility of becoming permanent; for existing APS employees it can be an s26 permanent transfer. Acting EL1 opportunities are available for high performers.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct internal assurance and review activities across financial processes and information
• Analyse financial and non-financial data to identify risks, gaps and opportunities for improvement
• Advise stakeholders on compliance requirements and internal control expectations
• Help develop and refine policies, procedures and training materials
• Support solutions that strengthen financial governance and operational effectiveness
• Engage with internal stakeholders to promote sound financial practices

Required profile

• Experience in internal audit, assurance or external audit
• Background such as external audit in the federal government, Big 4 or other audit firms, or internal audit/assurance in the APS or a Commonwealth entity
• Clear communication and strong stakeholder relationships
• Australian citizenship is required

Required skills

• Accounting or finance qualifications highly regarded
• Understanding of accounting principles and frameworks within the federal government context is beneficial
