Aluminium Smelter Operator

About the role

Rio Tinto's Boyne Smelter is looking for operators to join its three key operating areas. The role supports the safe and sustainable production of aluminium by operating mobile and fixed plant equipment alongside manual duties. It suits people wanting to start a new career, as no previous experience is required and full training and support are provided.

Key responsibilities

• Operate cranes to set anodes and tap metal, and other tasks to tend the cells
• Process operations such as cell dressing, raising beams, filling cell ore hoppers, tapping and transferring bath
• Drive mobile equipment as required, including forklifts
• Process control using control panels, casting hot metal, operating fixed plant equipment, using scabble guns, equipment isolation and de-isolation, process sampling and housekeeping
• Metal transportation with specialised equipment, furnace preparation, casting pit operation, ingot machine operation, product inspection and quality control, cutting saw operation, M-strap fabrication and dross handling

Required profile

• Current valid driver's licence
• Ability to work in a team, manage your own workload and work in a labour-intensive role, in confined spaces, at heights and in hot environments
• Experience operating mobile equipment such as forklift, elevated work platform, overhead gantry crane, bobcat or dozer (preferred but not essential)
• Willingness to work a lifestyle roster of 12-hour shifts, day and night
• Previous experience in auxiliary or rural fire services, SES, ERT or first aid may make you eligible for the emergency response team
