Accountant – Sports Retail

About the role

This professional accounting position is based in south‑east Melbourne and supports a growing sports retail business. You will be responsible for financial reporting, management accounting and compliance, providing insight to directors and senior management.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts and annual financial statements in line with Australian Accounting Standards.
• Own month‑end and year‑end close, including GL review, journals, accruals, pre‑payments and balance‑sheet reconciliations.
• Analyse revenue, margins and operating costs, producing commentary and variance reports.
• Develop budgets and cash‑flow forecasts and advise directors on financial performance.
• Lodge Business Activity Statements, calculate GST and prepare income‑tax workpapers, liaising with the external tax agent.
• Maintain the fixed‑asset register, calculate depreciation and review inventory valuation.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable and control accounts, strengthening internal controls.
• Manage external audit queries, prepare audit schedules and ensure complete accounting records.

Required profile

• Bachelor degree in accounting, commerce or related discipline.
• At least three years of relevant accounting experience, including management accounts and month‑end close.
• Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, GST and BAS requirements.
• Progress towards CA or CPA membership is highly regarded.
• Experience in retail or e‑commerce is a plus.

• Proficiency in accounting software.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

What we offer

• Salary $80,000–$90,000 per annum plus superannuation.
