WHS and Compliance Manager

About the role

An established medical research institute is recruiting a WHS and Compliance Manager in Sydney. Reporting to the Head of People + Culture and working alongside the existing WHS Business Partner, the role takes ownership of workplace health and safety across a specialist research environment, strengthening safety practices, managing risk and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Review and improve safety processes to meet the institute's evolving needs and activities
• Identify workplace risks and work with teams to implement effective controls
• Advise researchers and managers on practical ways to manage safety in their areas
• Oversee specialist safety requirements involving chemicals, biological materials and radiation
• Build staff awareness and capability through training, education and guidance
• Manage incident investigations and follow through on corrective actions
• Coordinate safety audits, facility accreditation and certification requirements
• Work with stakeholders to improve safety practices and embed a positive safety culture

Required profile

• At least five years' experience in a dedicated WHS role
• Experience in incident management, audits, compliance and risk assessment
• Experience in medical research, laboratories, hospitals or other highly regulated environments is essential
• Understanding of complex safety requirements and exposure to hazards such as chemicals, biological materials or radiation
• A relevant WHS qualification is desirable

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of WHS legislation and regulatory requirements
• Experience developing and improving safety systems, procedures and risk controls
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and influence change
