Veterinary Surgery Internship

About the role

The Veterinary Referral Hospital (VRH) in Melbourne's South-East is looking for a full-time, 12-month surgical intern to join its Surgery Department, starting in February 2027. The department is led by a specialist surgeon and a registrar who provide advanced surgical care and mentorship. The internship runs Monday to Friday on a 4-day week with no weekends or on-call duties.

Key responsibilities

• Assist surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgical cases, including soft tissue, orthopaedic, neurologic and oncologic procedures
• Work with surgery nurses on anaesthesia, perioperative care and patient recovery
• Manage patient care and case follow-ups with senior clinicians
• Take part in diagnostic imaging such as radiography, CT and MRI
• Join academic activities such as journal club, weekly intern presentations, physiology tutorials and one-on-one mentoring

Required profile

• Tertiary qualified veterinarian (DVM, BVSc or equivalent)
• Eligible for registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria
• Ideally some prior clinical experience or a rotating internship; motivated new graduates will also be considered
• Strong teamwork, communication and organisational skills
• Commitment to professional growth and high-quality patient care
